What does a coach actually do? From picking the lineup and tactics to managing players. A full guide to the most important figure behind the scenes.
The coach (manager) is the team's mastermind, responsible for tactics, selection and managing players on and off the pitch. Any team's success usually starts with its coach's thinking and ability to get the best from his players.
Selection and the game plan
The coach decides the starting lineup and the tactical system suited to each opponent, and who plays and who sits on the bench. A single selection call can flip a match.
Preparation and training
Behind every match is a full week of training and opponent analysis, setting attacking, defensive and set-piece plans. A good coach prepares his team for all expected scenarios.
Man-management
Much of the job is human and psychological: lifting morale, resolving disputes, managing pressure and building team spirit. A successful leader wins his group's trust before winning matches.
Reading the game and substitutions
During play the coach reads the match and makes substitutions and tactical tweaks at the right time. Many matches are decided by a smart change at the right moment. Follow analysis of coaches' decisions on Shahid Live.
