Football Tactics: Possession, High Press and the Counter-Attack

Why do some teams win with possession and others on the counter? A simple guide to modern football's main tactical schools.

Tactics are how a team organizes itself to win, covering how it attacks, defends and transitions between the two. There's no single perfect plan; rather different styles, each with strengths and weaknesses.

Possession (tiki-taka)

A philosophy based on keeping the ball through continuous short passes to tire the opponent and create chances with patience. It needs technical players and constant movement off the ball.

The high press (gegenpressing)

Instead of dropping back, the team presses the opponent the moment it loses the ball in the opponent's half to win it back quickly near their goal. Physically demanding but lethal when executed well.

The counter-attack

Teams that deliberately sit back and defend in an organized block, then strike at lightning speed on winning the ball, exploiting the space behind the opponent's defence. An ideal weapon against possession sides.

There's no absolute best

A smart coach picks the style that suits his players and opponent, and may change it within a match. This mental battle is part of the game's beauty. Learn more about formations and follow tactical analysis on Shahid Live.
