Football Positions Explained: A Simple Guide from Keeper to Striker

What does a holding midfielder do? What's the difference between a full-back and a winger? We explain every position and its core job so you understand team-building.

Every football team is made of eleven players spread across lines and jobs. Understanding each position deepens your viewing and reveals why coaches build their teams a certain way.

Goalkeeper

The last line of defense, the only one allowed to use hands inside the box. The modern keeper doesn't just save; he starts attacks with his feet and reads the play behind his defenders.

Defense

  • Centre-back (CB): cuts out attacks, marks strikers and leads the offside line. Needs strength and good reading.
  • Full-back (FB): defends the flanks and joins attacks with crosses. The modern full-back is half defender, half winger.

Midfield

  • Holding midfielder (DM): protects the defense, wins the ball and distributes it. The team's defensive brain.
  • Central midfielder (CM): links defense to attack and covers huge ground.
  • Attacking midfielder (AM): plays behind the striker and creates chances with the final pass.

Attack

  • Winger (W): plays wide, dribbles and crosses or cuts inside to shoot.
  • Striker (ST): whose first job is scoring, and who leads the press on opposing defenders.

Why understanding positions matters

Because a team isn't eleven individuals but a system of complementary roles. Knowing each position's job explains why a player is criticized despite scoring, or praised without touching the net. Browse player profiles on Shahid Live to see each star's position and stats.
