What does Expected Goals (xG) mean? Does more possession mean a better team? We explain the key numbers that appear after every match and how to read them wisely.
Years ago the only stat that mattered was the scoreline. Today, dozens of numbers appear after the final whistle: expected goals, possession, shots, key passes and more. But numbers without understanding can mislead. This guide explains the most important ones in plain language.
Expected Goals (xG): the key modern metric
xG stands for Expected Goals. The idea is simple: every shot is given a value between 0 and 1 representing its chance of becoming a goal, based on distance, angle, shot type and defenders' positions. A shot inside the box at an open goal might be worth 0.9; one from 30 meters, 0.03.
Add up a team's shot values and you get its total match xG. If a team scores once but posts an xG of 2.5, it created chances that should have yielded more — the score doesn't reflect the performance. Conversely, a team winning 1-0 with an xG of 0.3 relied on a rare chance or a brilliant striker.
Does more possession mean better?
Not always. Possession measures who holds the ball, not danger. Some teams keep 65% without a real chance, while counter-attacking sides win with 35%. Always read possession alongside shots and xG; together they tell the story.
Shots and shots on target
"15 shots" sounds great, but how many were on target? Shots on target measure accuracy and direct threat. Six shots with half on target is often more dangerous than 15 wild efforts.
Other numbers worth watching
- Assists and key passes: reveal the real playmaker, who may not be the scorer.
- Tackles and interceptions: measure defensive work and discipline.
- Pass accuracy: useful, but beware — easy sideways passes inflate it without threat.
How to use them as a smart viewer
Never look at a single number in isolation. Ask: does the score match the xG? Did possession turn into shots on target? Combine the numbers with what your eyes saw, and your read of the performance gets closer to the truth than the scoreline alone. At Shahid Live we show detailed stats for every match — from possession to xG and shots — inside the match page.
