A beginner's guide to football's core skills: passing, ball control, dribbling and shooting, and how to improve at each.
Football is built on four core skills: passing, ball control, dribbling and shooting. Mastering them is the difference between an amateur and an effective player, and all improve with repetition and practice.
Passing
Passing is the team's language. Start with short passes using the inside of the foot for accuracy, looking at the target and controlling the weight of the ball. Good passing keeps possession and creates chances.
Ball control (the first touch)
Receiving and settling the ball with a clean first touch is a decisive skill. A good first touch gives you time and space; a poor one loses the ball. Practise receiving with your foot, chest and thigh.
Dribbling and shooting
Dribbling relies on changing pace and direction and deceiving the defender. Shooting needs a steady plant foot, striking the middle of the ball, and aiming for the corners. Accuracy matters more than power alone.
How do you improve?
The key is regular repetition: simple daily drills beat a rare long session. Watch the pros and analyze their movements. Follow the best skills and highlights on Shahid Live to learn from them.
