The Champions League is the greatest club competition. Learn the new league-phase format, qualification and the knockout rounds.
The UEFA Champions League is the greatest and strongest club competition in the world, gathering Europe's best teams. It has adopted a new format that fundamentally changes the competition.
How do clubs qualify?
Clubs qualify through their positions in their domestic leagues (the champion and top places), and the number of slots per league depends on the UEFA coefficient. Stronger leagues get more places.
The new format: the league phase
The tournament replaced its small groups with a single league phase of 36 clubs in one table, each playing eight matches against different opponents. The top teams advance directly, and those below play a knockout play-off.
The knockout rounds
After the league phase the real drama begins: the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals over two legs, then a one-off final at a neutral venue to crown the champion of Europe.
Why is it the most valuable?
Because it brings together the best players, the biggest clashes and the highest revenues. Follow Champions League results and fixtures on Shahid Live.
