Craig Bellamy praises Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Wales' Nations League A opener against Portugal on Sept 27 in Liverpool.
Craig Bellamy said on 23 Sept 2026 that Cristiano Ronaldo is "beyond a superstar" ahead of Wales' Nations League A opener against Portugal.
The Welsh manager used the comment to motivate his squad, drawing a parallel between one of football's all‑time greats and the leadership expected on the pitch. The match is scheduled for 27 Sept at Anfield in Liverpool, marking Wales' first group‑stage game.
Match preview
- Ronaldo has 124 goals in 200 internationals, making him a constant threat.
- Wales rely on quick transitions led by Jay Rid and Ryan Bell.
- Portugal aim to cement top spot in Group A after a win over Spain.
Bellamy noted Ronaldo's experience in major tournaments could give Portugal an edge, but added that Welsh team spirit might be the decisive factor. If Wales can exploit set‑pieces and apply high pressure, they could limit Portugal's scoring chances.
The game will be broadcast live on BBC Sport and followed across Europe, with analysts highlighting the presence of a global star like Ronaldo as a key storyline.
