Eight Gulf nations compete at Khaleeji 27: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Iraq and Yemen. Meet the teams and the group format.
Gulf Cup 27 features eight national teams: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Iraq and Yemen. They are split into two groups of four, and the top two of each group reach the semi-finals.
The participating teams
The tournament is exclusive to the Gulf nations and their regional members in the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF):
- Saudi Arabia: the host and a leading contender, led by a generation blending pro experience and Saudi Pro League youth.
- Kuwait: the most-titled team in the tournament's history, always chasing former glory.
- Iraq: the "Lions of Mesopotamia," a strong traditional rival with a huge following.
- Qatar: carrying the experience of the 2022 World Cup and Asian titles.
- UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Yemen: teams capable of a surprise in a short tournament like this.
Group format
Each team plays three group matches (against every rival in its group). Three points for a win, one for a draw. The top two of each group advance, and if points are level the usual tie-breakers apply (goal difference, then head-to-head).
Why is a short tournament exciting?
Because every point counts and a single match can flip a team's fortunes. There's no room for a slow start as in a long league, making every round a peak of its own.
